Note: I am not an Apple user, nor am I affiliated with them in any way whatsoever. This post is merely a summarization and my thoughts on the Apple Event (May 7th), and nothing else.

Quick Updates

  • iPad 10th Gen is more affordable, now starting at $349.
  • iPad Mini remains the same with no updates.
  • iPad Pro is now the thinnest Apple product ever, replacing the iPod Nano.
  • All of the devices announced can be ordered on May 7th and will be available on May 14th.

M2 iPad Air

After Tim Cook started the event off with his trademark “Good morning”, John Ternus introduced the first product of the event, iPad Air, which now comes in a redesigned 11-inch Air, and a new 13-inch Air, reportedly due half of the iPad Pro users who chose a larger screen. The Liquid Retina Display remains the same with the the 12MP front facing camera now on the landscape edge, using the Center Stage to keep everyone on camera. There are two new colors, Blue and Purple, along with the Starlight and Space Grey. Finally it has the M2 chip, making it 50% faster than the M1 iPad Air.

M4 Chip

Instead of the M3 in the MacBook laptops announced in October 2023, Apple has chosen M4 for its new iPad models, to allow its thin design and the game-changing display. It brings mesh shading and ray tracing to the iPads for the first time, allowing console level games to be played. Their 16-core Neural Engine now optimizes M2 for AI, allowing 38 trillion operations/sec, along with a 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU, and dynamic catching.

M4 iPad Pro

The M4 iPad Pro comes in the 11-inch model, which is 5.3 mm thin, and the 13-inch variant, which is 5.1 inch mm thin, beating out the 6.9 mm thin iPod Nano for the thinnest Apple product ever. It also now uses a tandem OLED structure (OLED pixels generate both light and color, and a tandem structure combines two OLED panels) that allows the device to reach 1,000 nits of brightness and 1,600 nits of HDR brightness. This allows detail in shadows and low light, and deeper true blacks, which Apple calls Ultra Retina XDR.

Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro 2 are updates for the app on iPad, Final Cut Pro now supports Live Multicam, which allows creators to direct and connect four iPad/iPhone. To support this, a free standalone app named Final Cut Camera was released on iPhone and iPads. Meanwhile, the Logic Pro 2, gets a new Bass and Keyboard Player, built with AI. Stem Splitter now takes any recording and splits onto voice, drums, bass and other instruments.

Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil Pro

The Magic Keyboard has only a few updates, with a new function row and a larger trackpad with haptic feedback. However, the Apple Pencil Pro has a new sensor in the barrel, which allows you to squeeze the pencil for the tool palate, and a gyroscope that lets you use a barrel roll to control the tool you’re using. It also now supports Find My, for if and/or when you lose it. It also is supported on the iPad Air.

My Thoughts

This Apple Event was an great one for the iPads and while not the greatest one for updates, still pretty huge by Apple standards. With the new M4 chip being announced, it makes me more excited for the new AI capabilities that Apple will release, which in turn will only cause the competition to rise for AI. All right, and see you in my next post!!!
